✓ Why you should check your score regularly
  • Catch errors — if something's wrong (fraudulent account, wrong payment date), you can dispute it immediately
  • Track your progress — see how your score moves as you pay down debt or add credit history
  • Monitor for identity theft — soft inquiries on your own score won't hurt you, but hard inquiries by unknown lenders might signal fraud
⚠ Common myth: Checking your score hurts it

This is false. A soft inquiry (when you check your own score) does not affect your credit score. Only hard inquiries (when a lender checks as part of a credit decision) count against you. Checking your own score through your bank, Equifax, or TransUnion is always safe and free.
